Getting Liberty County Court Records
The office you ask for depends on the type of case. County misdemeanors, probate, guardianship, and county-court civil files belong to the County Clerk. Felony, district civil, and family records sit with the District Clerk. Municipal and justice-court matters stay with the court that heard them.
- Find the cause number and assigned court.
- Name the exact pleading, order, judgment, or docket sheet.
- Contact the clerk that holds that court file.
- Ask for the current fee, format, and turnaround.
- Arrange delivery, pickup, or certification as instructed.
Court Record Types
Copies come in two grades. A certified copy carries clerk authentication for official use. A plain copy works for reference. Liberty County posts no single fee chart covering every record type. Before ordering, ask about the per-page charge and the certification fee. Also ask about accepted payment methods and delivery costs.
- Case files and docket sheets
- Judgments and signed orders
- Criminal pleadings and dispositions
- Civil and public family records
- Probate and guardianship records subject to access limits
Inside a Liberty County Court Record
A court file is more than its docket sheet. The docket itself is just the chronological index. The individual records behind it hold the actual arguments, evidence, rulings, and certifications. If you need spoken testimony, that is a court-reporter transcript, which follows its own separate request path.

Fees and Certified Copies
Match the record to the right office. County misdemeanors, probate, guardianship, and county-court civil files come from the County Clerk. Felony, district civil, and family records come from the District Clerk. Municipal and justice-court records remain with the court that issued or heard the matter.

Sealed Records and Public Access
Not every file is open. Sealed, juvenile, and other sensitive records stay restricted under court-access rules. Public material, though, can be requested from whichever clerk lawfully holds it.
Key Rules:
Texas Code § 76a and 21c - These rules govern sealing and protection of sensitive data..

Two Liberty County Clerks
Liberty County splits its court files between two clerks. The County Clerk keeps county misdemeanor, probate, guardianship, and county-court civil records. The District Clerk holds felony, district civil, and family matters. Both offices share the same courthouse address. A misdirected request simply burns time. Route it correctly the first time.
Municipal and JP records stay with the issuing local court. An Ames ticket, a Cleveland citation, or a JP eviction belongs at that court, not a district-record counter. That rule holds unless the docket shows a later transfer or appeal.
Docket Sheet or Full File
A docket sheet lists actions by date. It can identify the petition, motion, notice, hearing, order, and judgment. It does not show their full text. For the actual documents, you need the case file, which holds the individual public records. A certified copy authenticates one selected record. A court-reporter transcript captures the spoken proceedings through a separate request process.
| Record | What it supplies | Request source |
|---|---|---|
| Docket sheet | Chronological event list | Case clerk |
| Filed document | Actual pleading or order | Case clerk |
| Transcript | Reported proceeding | Assigned court reporter |
Older Liberty County Files
Older files take extra patience. Liberty County has no universal online archive or posted retention schedule. Some historical material may be stored offsite or on microfilm, given the county's long courthouse history. Ask the clerk whether a missing file is archived, whether a terminal in the office shows images unavailable online, and whether retrieval adds cost or turnaround time.
The courthouse address is 1923 Sam Houston Street. Use the west public entrance on Travis Street. Confirm the office room and hours before you travel.
County Misdemeanor Copy Rule
One local rule matters here. The County Clerk states that certified county misdemeanor copies are not digital. They cannot be obtained through a public-information request. Call 936-336-4670 to arrange payment and pickup. That instruction is specific. It overrides any generic assumption that all public files can be emailed.
Before ordering, consider your intended use. Ask for a plain copy, certified disposition, complete docket, or selected judgment to match it. A cheap screen print will not satisfy an agency that requires clerk certification.
Precise Liberty Record Requests
Precision saves trips. Identify the exact case, court, parties, record title, and approximate filing date. Say whether you want inspection, a plain copy, a certified copy, or a transcript. Get the fee and expected turnaround before you pay. Skip personal details the clerk does not need to locate the file.
Access is record-specific: a public case shell does not guarantee that every exhibit or image can be released.
Rules and Appeals Sources
The OCA local-rules search locates rules, forms, and standing orders.

Always confirm the selected court and the current rule date. The Ninth Court of Appeals page identifies Liberty County's regional appellate court.

Appellate dockets are separate from the originating clerk file.
